I spent NYE with my best friend in the city that celebrates New Year's the best; NYC. 

My outfit was atypical of the holiday as I avoided the 'I bathed in sequins' look. I wore my "Curse of Frankenstein" crop top (clearly a TopShop purchase), lemon bandage skirt, and ankle boots for a bright and chic New Year's look.

WINTER WONDERLAND!

For some, the winter holidays bring a time of cheer and uplift, but for others the season is filled with anxiety. Many family members fly into the midst of our, already chaotic, lives leaving us with feelings of disarray, especially if this holiday is the first time your boyfriend is being put on the family pedestal for examination.  But I’m not a holiday cynic; I absolutely adore New York in its winter state. It’s quite a sight to walk down snowy 5^th Avenue and to be presented with each store’s festive windows. Bergdorf Goodman, Henri Bendel, and Barney’s, are the most well-known for their illustrious decorations; the authentic New York experience is incomplete without seeing them.

This year Bergdorf’s windows are inspired by Alice in Wonderland, exuding the whimsical sensation that the holiday season brings with it. Recently, I posted an article on my blog Gotham Hipster about the upcoming release of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. The movie takes an eerie spin on the classic, and Bergdorf’s windows hits the film's style right on target.

Both the movie and the store have inspired me to reflect a more fanciful vibe with my clothes. I have been experimenting a lot with white tights and more bows, seeing what a striking statement they can add to an ensemble. The holidays are a great time to begin experimenting with a new style and New Year’s is right around the corner so get to it!

TOPSHOP AND THE AMERICAN GIRL.

When Topshop first arrived in the US, all mayhem ensued.  International fans of the shop lined up in Soho for a glimpse of Kate Moss and her collection. Pinkberry treated those who waited in the never ending line to complimentary frozen yogurt, and the amount of media coverage over the two block radius was chaotic. I, however, feared Topshop’s opening and waited until the pandemonium had died down to pay a visit.

It did not.

Eventually when I did make my way to the store for the first time, it was crowded and crazy but I didn’t care, I had found heaven- that is to say heaven with $45 leotard. Topshop surely revolutionized New York stores.

I have compiled my Topshop must-haves for the holiday season, because evidently that’s what they’ll become, my cravings.

NYC Style: How to Wear a Beanie Hat.

BEANIE BABIES!

The beanie has been made popular by celebrities like Emma Roberts, Nicole Richie, Katie Holmes, Miley Cyrus and Rihanna. They can be found throughout the streets of NY, but beanie etiquette, so to speak, can be benefitted from internationally.

If not worn properly the beanie has potential to look like:

“I was too lazy this morning to put together an outfit, instead I just threw a sock over my head and walked out the door.” 

The beanie can lead an outfit in the “faux hipster” direction, so to balance the cozy hat one must be cautious.

Taking cues from Katie Holmes, a tight top-half and baggy boyfriend jeans teamed with a cute pair of textured flats play nicely with the material of the hat.

Jessica Alba also works the beanie quite well. By pairing a fun graphic tee with skinny jeans and lace up boots she looks ready for any condition.

Unfortunately Rihanna has fallen into the realm of what I like to call “death by beanie.” By wearing her hair tightly pulled back and the rest of her ensemble tightly fit, her large  beanie completely consumes her.

It might seem that the beanie has more cons than pros, but don’t let that discourage you, the beanie can enhance your outfit in a unique way, especially if you have bangs.  I have yet to see the beanie be worn in a more fancy social setting, but there's nothing to stop you from being the first to do so! Just remember the tips and you’re set!
